From Religion

Thomas Moore & Hari Kirin,
Kripalu, March 25-27, 2011

Tom, Bear and HK in winter

Many of us began our lives within the confines of an institutional religion where the emphasis was on keeping the rules, not deviating from the teachings, and increasing membership. But over time, our experiences and secular learnings have changed us. Now we want a more personally relevant, positive, less moralistic approach. Perhaps we have tried other traditions, teachers, books, workshops, and retreats in an effort to create a deeper, more engaged, tailor-made spiritual way. This workshop is for anyone who is trying to sort out religious tradition from a spiritual path.

Thomas Moore and Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa both started out as dedicated Catholics and have moved in new directions that are alive and meaningful to them. It's not that they don't value their roots, but that they have blossomed in unexpected ways.

During the weekend, we will deepen our connection to the spiritual life through yoga, meditation, and chant. We will ground our practice through self-inquiry, lecture, discussion, and creative-arts exercises where we'll get to choose from music, art, writing, and movement. No previous yoga experience is required.

I'd like to tell you some details about events that are coming up.

On March 9th I join old friends Fred and Mary Ann Brussat for an E-Course "The Spirituality of the Gospels." I worked hard on this course and think it will be solid, enlightening and inspiring. It consists of selections from my translation of the Gospels followed by commentary, practice, and art work. If you think that the Gospels don't have much to give you, think again and find surprises in this absorbing program: www.spiritualityandpractice.com

On March 14th I'll be at Glenstal Abbey near Limerick, Ireland to visit my friends there, especially Abbott Mark Patrick Hederman. Then I go to Dublin to have a luncheon meeting with a representative of the Royal College of Surgeons. Then I go to London, where on March 19th I'll speak for an institute that trains therapists--Re-Vision--"Artemis and Her Children." I've been writing and speaking about this Greek goddess of virginity and integrity for years. I think there is much to learn from her mythology, especially in relation to education, medicine, and child-rearing.

On March 22 I'll be in Cheltenham, UK, at the Isborne Holistic Centre to talk about the cultivation of soul and spirit in ordinary life. www.isborne.org

On March 23rd I speak in London at the World Congress of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Andrology, at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre. I'll join others who are trying to move medicine into new areas of psychological and spiritual thinking with a talk called "Soul and Spirit in Medicine." www.coga2011.com

On March 25th I'll join my wife, Hari Kirin, for a workshop at Kripalu in Lenox, MA called "From Religion to Spirituality." I have written a book, not yet published, called Zen Catholic, in which I trace my passage from traditional Catholicism to a deeper and broader spirituality. In this workshop we'll work with participants to free up past blockages and find fulfilling ways to move toward a more liberating form of spirituality. www.kripalu.org

On April 1st I'll be in New York for a special evening of conversation, details still being worked out.

On April 3rd I join Julianne Davidow for a presentation at the Open Center on Italian Renaissance art and magic.

On April 15th I'll be in Toronto, joining Rev. Wayne Walder for a very special program called Soul-Spirit Dialogues. Wayne and I want to offer people an opportunity to deepen their spiritual experiences and, when applicable, their leadership roles. This intensive weekend will be held at the beautiful McMichael Gallery. Wayne and I have been planning this event for over a year. I was inspired to create it after spending a week with Unitarian Universalist Ministers in Ottawa. I felt that there is a need for the deepening of religion, theology and spirituality. I expect this to be an extraordinary opportunity. It will also involve online presentations and conversations before and after the event.
