"Spirituality and Care of the Soul in Psychotherapy"

July 11 - 15, 2011
New England Educational Institute, Cape Cod

Whether you are a mental health or medical professional, your main job is to heal wounded hearts, minds, and bodies. This symposium will focus on the calling to help people in physical, emotional, and spiritual trouble. Participants will reflect on their own spiritual journeys and explore ways of meditation and contemplation. They will learn the difference between soul and spirit and see how they can blend psychological counseling with spiritual guidance. The shadow elements in psychotherapy and spirituality will be examined both personally and theoretically. The role of dreams and the arts in therapy will also be explored. finally, participants will consider ways to care for themselves spiritually and emotionally and prepare themselves as persons for the deep work of psychotherapy.
In this symposium, Thomas Moore will offer a way to practice therapy with a rich and positive philosophy to life while including paradoxes and challenges.

April 2011

To bring you up to date, Care of the Soul in Medicine and The Guru of Golf will be out in paperback this summer. I'm still looking for a publisher for GOSPEL, my translation and commentary on the New Testament Gospels. I am working on a video to help patients and healthcare providers in hospitals and medical centers. I need some funding for that good project. If you are looking for a good cause . . . And it appears that the theme, the soul of education, is putting a claim on me. In one way or another I expect to write about it seriously during the next year. I was so inspired by my experiences at the London congress on gynecology where I spoke in March that I hope to continue working in that area. Finally, as I write, my close friend James Hillman is suffering a relapse of cancer and is heavily on my mind. I paid him a visit, at the time of his radiation treatments, that was tender, reflective and crackling with wit. Oh, and my wife's superb book Art & Yoga will be out June 21st and her amazing show of huge paintings, Wherever You Are is the Center of the World is at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in Brattleboro, Vermont until July 3rd.

Writing In The Sand

With his phenomenally best-selling book, Care of the Soul, and related works, Thomas Moore has guided millions of people in their search for a meaningful life.

This workshop is based on Moore's latest book, Writing in the Sand: Jesus and the Soul of the Gospels, which circles back to Moore's early days as a Catholic monk, but is informed by his 30 years of experience as an archetypal, soul-based psychotherapist and theologian. The result is nothing less than a profound achievement for anyone of any faith-or lack thereof.

"You don't have to be Christian to make the Gospels an important source of your spiritual life and practice," Moore says in Writing in the Sand. "You only have to read these texts for their spiritual insight and for the spiritual path they offer."

Moore and his wife, Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa, guide us through meditation, chant, communal reflection, self-examination, reading, and walking meditation as we open to the joy of human life and relationship, and discover a spirituality of the divine that never conflicts with the pleasures of our earthly existence.

Recommended reading: Moore, Writing in the Sand. Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa is also teaching Art & Yoga Retreat; October 10-15, 2010.

Thomas Moore, PhD, is the author of 17 books on spirituality and soulful living. Because of his deep appreciation for Buddhism, he often refers to himself as a "Zen Catholic." careofthesoul.net

Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa, MFA, MA, is a lead trainer of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan and an artist dedicated to healing through yoga and art. She began yoga and meditation with Christian monks in 1971 and has taught since 1985. artandyoga.com

In my latest book Care of the Soul in Medicine, I offer
my vision for improving health care. I spell out what it means to treat patients as whole persons-body, soul and spirit, and, as usual, I tell stories from my own experience and some that I've heard in my travels. As in Dark Nights of the Soul, I deal with illness as a rite of passage, an event that has important meaning for the patient and the health care giver as well.

The idea for this book came from readers of Care of the Soul. When that book first appeared almost twenty years ago, I began receiving letters from hospitals and medical schools interested in my point of view. In the intervening years I have spoken at countless medical events and have visited hospitals, medical schools and hospices. To prepare for this book I spent two days each month over a two-year period at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, where I got to know hospital life with some intimacy.

So, this is a very meaningful publication for me. I want
to add the deep human and spiritual perspective to the
current discussion about health care.  The book is not
abstract or theoretical. In it I speak from my passions as a healer and as a patient. I look forward to hearing your responses to this book. To purchase Care of the Soul In Medicine click on the book cover to the [left]. To meet me on the road click on an event for more information or to register.
Thanks,
Thomas Moore
