I CAN DO IT!2011

September 24, 2011
2 - 4:30 pm

The Grand Hall, The Grand Hall Connaught Rooms
61-65 Great Queen Street London, England

To be a healthy person you have to care daily for health of your soul and spirit, as well as your body. Certain spiritual and psychological illnesses affect the body and make the whole person sick. This presentation teaches you how we become ill in soul and spirit and how to care for these elements daily to keep them healthy. It also explores themes from Thomas' latest book Care of the Soul in Medicine, about healing soul and spirit in a typical medical context. Thomas looks at the image of Jesus as Lithargoel, the Pearl that heals, and at the Lapis Lazuli Radiant Healing Buddha, who blends health and sickness in one subtle, complex view of life. In this new direction in his work, Thomas presents a truly alternative view of illness and health.

August 2011

I have spent the summer tidying up my translation of the Gospels of the New Testament. I took the advice of my friend Christopher Bamford and added many more side notes offering my own reflections on passages. The project is almost ready, but I still don't have firm publishing plans. I've also been working hard to shape a new book that will include extensive reflections on the work and lives of Emily Dickinson, Henry Thoreau and Glenn Gould, all remarkable people who fashioned unique lives. In September Hari Kirin and I will  be doing a workshop on yoga and healing at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, a place that has been a kind of home for me for several years. Then I travel to the UK to speak at the Hay House I Can Do It Conference in London  on the soul and spirit of medicine and then consult with interesting medical groups in Scotland, a visit made available to me by an extraordinary pioneer in the psychology of medicine, Dr. Clare Willocks. As soon as I get  home I speak for the Evergreen Institute here in New Hampshire on the broader issue of caring for the soul during illness.

Just recently I also started a blog on my web site that has both ideas and personal information, and I continue to write a daily reflection on Twitter. I try to make these brief meditations solid and well phrased. The new app of quotes from Care of the Soul is almost ready, too. That will be available on the "Store" section of the web site. My son Abe has been working on the design, making a form that is simple and Zen-like. I'm sure that eventually the Twitter pieces will be in a similar form.

The weekend of October 21st I'll be in Santa Fe to give my course in "Care of the Soul and Spirituality in Psychotherapy" for the New England Educational Institute. Santa Fe is a wonderful town, and this intensive weekend is always enjoyable.  It's designed for psychotherapists, but I define the word "therapy" broadly, and I think anyone could benefit from this three-day immersion in archetypal psychology and ideas about soul.

I think it's painfully clear to everyone that our new century has not yet moved in the direction of being a more soulful time. We have to keep working at this idea until it really influences the culture. So, please join me in a substantive conversation about these important ideas on my web site and in person. I keep traveling, and I ask you to come out and be with me.

"From Religion to Spirituality"
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat
Led by Thomas Moore and Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa

Many of us began our lives within the confines of an institutional religion where the emphasis was on keeping the rules, not deviating from the teachings, and increasing membership. But over time, our experiences and secular learnings have changed us. Now we want a more personally relevant, positive, less moralistic approach. This workshop is for anyone who is trying to sort out religious tradition from a spiritual path.

This weekend we will deepen our connection to spiritual life through yoga, meditation, and chant. We will ground our practice through self-inquiry, lecture, discussion, and creative-arts exercises where we'll get to choose music, art, writing, and movement. No previous yoga experience required.

June 2011: Moore appears in new Vickers film

masthead

People v. The State of Illusion
People v. The State of Illusion
Exalt Films, and Movies From The Heart, are proud to present People v. The State of Illusion, a film by Austin Vickers.  This feature length documentary/ drama, directed by award winning Director Scott Cervine, is set in the notorious "Old Main Prison" of the New Mexico State Penitentiary, and tells the story of Aaron Roberts, a single father who is arrested and tried on manslaughter and assault charges following an incident that claims the life of a woman.  Following his conviction and imprisonment, Aaron's daughter is sent to a State home for children because there are no other family members to care for her.  While in the State home, an attorney learns of her plight and the story of her father, and decides to represent her in an innovative and surprising case against the State.

Written and produced by Austin Vickers, this movie explores the science and power of perception and imagination and the prison walls of habitual thought and behavior that we all create, and documents the evidence that answers the central question of this provocative film, "can we really change?" Featured in the film are 9 of the nation's leading thinkers in the fields of neuroscience, biochemistry, psychology, quantum physics, sociology, and consciousness theory.

June 2011

June has been a soggy month in New Hampshire, good for the plants sprouting up all around me but not for outdoor activities. At least once a week I play golf, a somewhat maligned sport that I find fascinating both as a game and as a fantasy. I'd like to write another book about it, but I don't suppose there is much of a market for my approach. I wrote a piece for the Huffington Post on sports, and it was one of the least read of my contributions.
I'm also planning a book on the loss of humanity in our science-driven society. I'm using Thoreau's two-year retreat at Walden as my inspiration and as an archetypal model for what we need. I don't have a publisher yet, so I don't know for sure if this idea will become a reality.
I'll be teaching again on Cape Cod in July for the New England Educational Institute. I always enjoy that week of interaction with doctors, psychiatrists and social workers (and a few ordinary folks), talking about Jung and Hillman and my own take on spirituality. I'm also taking an active part in spreading the word about my wife's new book Art & Yoga. Finally, I've taken to writing very brief observations on twitter almost every day. I like the form and the brevity. I can imagine a book of such tweets.

April 2011

To bring you up to date, Care of the Soul in Medicine and The Guru of Golf will be out in paperback this summer. I'm still looking for a publisher for GOSPEL, my translation and commentary on the New Testament Gospels. I am working on a video to help patients and healthcare providers in hospitals and medical centers. I need some funding for that good project. If you are looking for a good cause . . . And it appears that the theme, the soul of education, is putting a claim on me. In one way or another I expect to write about it seriously during the next year. I was so inspired by my experiences at the London congress on gynecology where I spoke in March that I hope to continue working in that area. Finally, as I write, my close friend James Hillman is suffering a relapse of cancer and is heavily on my mind. I paid him a visit, at the time of his radiation treatments, that was tender, reflective and crackling with wit. Oh, and my wife's superb book Art & Yoga will be out June 21st and her amazing show of huge paintings, Wherever You Are is the Center of the World is at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in Brattleboro, Vermont until July 3rd.
